Anthropic, the Amazon-backed- artificial intelligence startup, introduces a new API feature- Citations that allows Claude, Anthropic’s AI model, to ground its answers in the source document and cite them as soon as the fetched information appears in the response. With this, it can now provide you with detailed references and context to the exact sentences and passages that it cites in its response leading to more verifiable, trustworthy outputs.

This new feature allows the AI model to verify the source behind whatever information it produces in response to the user query. Dealing away with the previous arrangements that needed complex coding and prompts, this time You can now add source documents to the context window, and when querying the model, Claude automatically cites claims in its output that are inferred from those sources.

Athropic’s Citations: What Process Does It Follow?

First, it processes the user-provided source documents by chunking them into sentences. Further these chunked sentences, along with user-provided context, are then passed to the model with the user's query. The model then analyzes the query and generates a response that includes precise citations based on the provided chunks and context for any claims derived from the source material.
