Ant Group, the fintech powerhouse associated with Alibaba, is making its way into the humanoid robotics industry. The company has begun recruiting professionals specialising in humanoid robot systems and applications through its subsidiary, Shanghai Ant Lingbo Technology. This entity was established in late 2024 with a registered capital of 100 million yuan (approximately $13.73 million), according to local media reports.

China’s Growing Interest in Humanoid Robotics

Humanoid robots—machines designed to mimic human form and movement—have become a rapidly emerging investment area in China. Both major corporations and startups across various industries, including technology, electric vehicles, and manufacturing, are pouring resources into this sector. Recognising its potential, the Chinese government has identified humanoid robotics as one of the "new productive forces" that could drive economic growth. This strategic focus also aligns with Beijing’s broader ambition to strengthen its technological leadership and compete with the United States in innovation and artificial intelligence.

Tech Giants and Their Robotics Endeavours

Several Chinese tech firms have already embarked on significant robotics initiatives. Companies like Meituan and Xiaomi are actively developing their robotic technologies. Xiaomi, for instance, has been involved in robotics since 2022, when it introduced its first full-scale humanoid bionic robot, CyberOne. Others are entering the field through strategic investments and partnerships. Tencent, a leading name in China’s tech industry, has been engaged in the robotics space since 2018, when it invested 50 million yuan in Leju Robot, a Shenzhen-based startup.
