Google debuts the free AI-powered version of its Coding Assistant—a public preview of Gemini Code Assist for individuals. In times when more than 75% of developers are relying on AI in their daily responsibilities, Google’s Gemini Code Assist is all set to become a valuable tool for the developers out there. Specifically optimized for coding, Gemini Code Assist supports all the programming languages in the public domain.

It is powered by the Gemini 2.0 foundational AI model, equipping the agent with the latest reasoning and generation capabilities. It can perform tasks ranging from completing your code as you write to generating whole code blocks or functions on demand. It can also generate better code, resulting in a high-value final product, and is not limited only to the role of an AI-powered code accelerant.

Gemini Code Assist: Empowering Unlimited Code Completions

It offers 180,000 code completions per month, which can be practically called unlimited, while other popular coding assistants offer only 20,000 completions per month. The limit remains so high that even a professional developer will come under extreme pressure if asked to exceed it.

Gemini Code Assist: AI-Powered Code Reviews

A quality and efficient code review process is critical while developing any software or application, yet it is often time-consuming and stands in the way of getting things done. To solve this, a public preview of Gemini Code Assist for GitHub has also been made available to provide free, AI-powered code reviews for both public and private repositories.

It will optimize the time taken to perform code reviews, thus contributing to efficient operations.

Gemini Code Assist: Grounding with Local Database

This expansive context window supported by the tool enables developers to work with large files while allowing Gemini Code Assist to understand their local codebases deeply. The tool supports up to 128,000 input tokens in chat, providing a generous token limit for enhanced coding assistance.
