As per the reports received, Prasar Bharti is currently conducting trials for a direct-to-mobile telecast on smartphones for its live feed.

What does Direct-to-mobile mean?

Direct-to-mobile refers to the direct transmission of a given service or content directly to a smartphone without the need for any internet or broadband connection using some hardware like chips and stuff. Prasar Bharti is currently testing the feasibility of the D2m telecast services through its trials.

Status

The broadcaster is currently conducting trials in various cities including Delhi in close collaboration with its partners IIT Kanpur and Sankhya Labs. The trials are being conducted with both high-power and low-power transmissions, as of now.

Outcomes

As per the reports, the trials so far alongside IIT Kanpur have been quite successful with prerequisites like the installation of transmitters on cellular towers coupled with specialized chips into smartphones. This is because the broadcast signals used in direct-to-mobile broadcasting are transmitted without internet or broadband, which necessitates specific hardware enabling the receiving and decoding of these signals.

Higher Stability

Since the broadcast signals don't depend upon the internet or broadband for their transmission, these facilitate high-quality streaming of both audio and video with better potential, as a whole.

MoU

The broadcaster signed an MoU in July 2019 to enter into research and development in various areas like D2M broadcasting, 5G Convergence, rural broadband, and next-generation broadcasting standards.

Previous Instances

Previous instances of direct broadcasting include a pilot broadcasting of sporting events like IPL three years ago to assess the specifics of the initiative.
