Gaming industry leaders and associations such as the All India Gaming Federation (AIGF) and E-Gaming Federation (EGF) are collaborating to create a unified policy framework for their member companies. This initiative aims to implement robust Know-Your-Customer (KYC) protocols, mitigate gaming and gambling addiction, and promote responsible gameplay.
According to an industry insider, these standardized principles will apply across skill-based and chance-based games to establish uniformity within the sector. Unlike the voluntary code of ethics signed in December 2023 by various gaming associations—including AIGF, EGF, the Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports, and the Internet and Mobile Association of India—this proposed code is intended to be more comprehensive.
The voluntary code aimed to uphold consumer choice, informed decision-making, and foster a safe gaming environment. However, the new common code of conduct is seen as a strategic move to present a united front amidst challenges like high taxes, regulatory uncertainties, and legal disputes over the distinction between skill and chance-based games. India’s gaming market continues to grow, with Niko Partners reporting that the Asia and MENA regions generated $85.5 billion in video game revenue in 2023.
