Apple is reportedly planning to introduce 5G connectivity in its future Apple Watch models, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of its wearable technology. The move aligns with the tech giant's broader adoption of 5G across its product lineup. Since cellular-enabled Apple Watches debuted with the Series 3 in 2017, they have relied on 4G LTE connectivity. However, new reports suggest that this will soon change as Apple looks to equip its wearables with the advanced capabilities of 5G.

MediaTek to power Apple Watch's new connectivity

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple plans to replace Intel modems in its cellular Apple Watch models with 5G modems from MediaTek. The inclusion of MediaTek's technology will enable the watches to support 5G RedCap, a streamlined version of 5G designed for wearables and IoT devices. RedCap prioritises energy efficiency over speed, making it an ideal choice for a device like the Apple Watch. This shift marks another step in Apple's gradual departure from Intel components across its product ecosystem. The company has already transitioned its Mac lineup to in-house silicon, demonstrating its commitment to reducing reliance on third-party suppliers.

Satellite connectivity feature

Beyond the introduction of 5G, Apple is also reportedly working on an innovative satellite connectivity feature for its high-end Apple Watch Ultra 3 model. While details remain scarce, this development could position the device as a leader in emergency and off-grid communication capabilities, catering to adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts. With these advancements, Apple continues to push the boundaries of what its wearable technology can achieve, integrating cutting-edge connectivity features and enhancing user experiences.
