Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Electronics & IT, Government of India, has announced that the semiconductor facility in Morigaon, Assam is set for completion by mid-2025. This project, led by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT), with an investment of ₹27,000 crore, is a pivotal step towards self-reliance in India's semiconductor ecosystem.

The Morigaon unit will produce up to 48 million semiconductor chips daily using advanced packaging technologies such as flip chips and Integrated System in Package (ISIP). It is designed to cater to critical industries, including automotive, EVs, telecommunications, and consumer electronics, positioning itself as a premier manufacturing hub in India.

Beyond its technological significance, the facility will generate substantial socio-economic benefits, creating 15,000 direct and up to 13,000 indirect jobs. This development will stimulate regional economic growth in Assam and nearby areas. The site will also serve domestic and global markets, enhancing India's role in the global semiconductor supply chain. The Indian semiconductor market, currently valued at $38 billion in 2023, is expected to grow to $109 billion by 2030, driven by such initiatives.

To foster domestic manufacturing, the Indian government has launched the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and the Semicon India program, allocating ₹76,000 crore to support fabrication units, packaging facilities, and design-linked incentives. These efforts aim to create a robust semiconductor ecosystem, reducing import dependency and supporting rapid industry growth. With surging global demand for semiconductors, India is set to emerge as a key player in the global digital economy, driving innovation, creating jobs, and solidifying its position in the semiconductor value chain.
