Elon Musk, the tech billionaire, has floated an open offer to the board of OpenAi to buy its non-profit wing for nearly 100 Million USD. The offer has been communicated through Musks’s lawyer, Marc Toberoff. The offer aims to take over all the assets of OpenAI and reinstate its old non-profit identity. It happened after Musk had filed a petition previously against OpenAI going for-profit.

The company had earlier referred to the efforts by the billionaire as hypocrisy and unfair means to affect OpenAI’s business prospects. It has called out the billionaire for pursuing the petition against OpenAI going for-profit as contradictory to his opinion about OpenAI long back in 2017.

OpenAI: Why Does He Want to Buy It Again?

As per the reports, the petition by the billionaire has so far aimed to stop the company from going for-profit as it would render the current CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, a handsome amount of equities and eventually make the most advanced innovations of the age play in the hands of money and power.

OpenAI: Is Elon Concerned For Human Good?

As per the statement from the billionaire’s attorney, the deal would reinstate OpenAI’s non-profit status, but does he want to do that only?  As per the reports by the Wall Street Journal, the offer by the billionaire aims to increase the gross evaluation of the non-profit firm and, in turn, make it hard for the current OpenAI’s CEO to get a stake in it for a lower price as it transitions into for-profit while handsome equity of the for-profit rests with the non-profit.

This proposal by the billionaire aims to increase the complication in the transition and render the non-profit wing significant control over the for-profit wing, as the experts comment.

Sam Altman, once the news got public, posted on X, owned by Elon Musk, “No thank you, but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want”, declining the offer.
