The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a results-based loan of USD 788.8 million (equivalent to over ₹6,600 crore) to support the development of Amaravati as a sustainable, green, and smart capital city. According to an official statement from the ADB, the loan, denominated in Japanese yen, amounts to 121.97 billion yen. The Amaravati Inclusive and Sustainable Capital City Development Programme aims to transform Amaravati into a vibrant regional hub, bolstering economic opportunities, creating jobs, and improving the quality of life for its residents. This ambitious project is set to position Amaravati as a model for modern urban development while fostering regional growth.
Global expertise for a sustainable city
ADB, along with other multilateral development banks (MDBs), will contribute global knowledge and technical expertise to support the Government of Andhra Pradesh in building a strong, sustainable foundation for the capital city. Mio Oka, ADB's Country Director for India, emphasised the importance of the initiative, stating, “We believe Amaravati will not only set a precedent for greenfield city development but also serve as a replicable framework for transforming peri-urban areas across India.” The project is expected to establish Amaravati as a benchmark for systematic and organised urban transformation, combining cutting-edge infrastructure with sustainability. It reflects a vision of urbanisation that integrates inclusive growth with environmental responsibility
