Karnataka's Urban Development Minister, BS Suresh, has initiated a detailed investigation into six Smart City projects across the state, excluding Bengaluru city. This decision follows rising concerns about the quality and focus of these initiatives. During a review meeting, Minister Suresh assessed the progress of Smart City projects in Belagavi, Davangere, Hubballi-Dharwad, Mangaluru, Shivamogga, and Tumkur. He expressed disappointment that a significant portion of the funds had been utilised for temporary infrastructure, including roads, drainage, and repairs, rather than creating permanent assets such as smart schools, hospitals, and libraries.

Formation of an independent investigation committee

The minister directed the Urban Development Department Secretary to establish a committee to investigate the projects comprehensively. This committee will include independent experts, officials from various departments, technical specialists, and representatives from academic institutions like universities and the Indian Institute of Science. The committee is tasked with submitting its findings within three months.

Prioritising Smart Schools for underprivileged children

Minister Suresh stressed the need to prioritise permanent infrastructure projects, particularly smart schools equipped with advanced technology, to benefit underprivileged children. He also warned against further lapses in the execution of these projects, highlighting dissatisfaction among local representatives in Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad, and Shivamogga.
