Since Elon Musk’s name has become equivalent to innovation in today’s tech space, it seems his arrival in the gaming space can be coupled with some surprises and upheavals

In a recent tweet, XAI’s founder, Elon Musk, said that his new AI venture XAI will start a game studio “to make games great again”.

The Problem

The Musk tweet we are referring to was made in response to a tweet by the Dogecoin founder wherein he complained about the game developers and game journalism getting ideologically captured.

He possibly meant an ideological capture that the gaming industry might have entered into disabling the industry from having multiple viewpoints or diversity in thought and expression, majorly in terms of the concept and development of games.

Anti-Greedy Corporations & Trollers

The user referred to the gaming industry as falling prey to greedy corporations & dumb- manipulative biases rather than opposing them that have damaged the gaming industry over time.  The concern might be surrounding the incorporation of moral stuff into gaming rather than just keeping it authentic and not getting into any sort of ideological dissemination.

Autonomy

While including moral stuff and learning in the game might be a matter of debate among gamers and in the industry, it should ever not be an imposed one as with it comes the risk of inviting plenty of criticism and also aversion within the industry through labeling and ostracisation.

Some Bitter Instances

While the claims might or  might not stand true, here are a few bitter instances that the gaming industry has seen so far that remain to be kept back in mind while we explore this arena:

  1.  The Gamergate Incident: A highly controversial and corrosive digital campaign that was pushed against women in the gaming industry after a spark was ignited through a dispute between game developer Zoe Quinn and her ex-boyfriend, who accused her of unethical behavior, including sleeping with game critics for favorable reviews. It left a big eclipse on gaming journalists as well as women developers in the industry.
  2. The Last of Us, II:  The Last of Us Part II" in 2020 ignited a firestorm of controversy within the gaming community. The inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters, particularly the character of Abby, a lesbian soldier, sparked significant debate and online harassment. Some players felt that the game's focus on these characters detracted from the core narrative and alienated a portion of the fanbase.

However, many critics and players praised the game's willingness to tackle difficult themes and challenge conventional storytelling norms. It continues to spark debates in the industry.

XAI’s Entry

As Elon Musk is known for supporting various not-so-common stuff, Dogecoin is one of them, it seems his arrival in the gaming space can be coupled with some surprises and upheavals.  While the exact details regarding the gaming studio remain unknown it would be pretty interesting to keep the loop updated.
