Amazon has successfully deployed over 10,000 electric delivery vehicles (EVs) in India, achieving this milestone in October 2024—more than a year earlier than planned. These EVs are now operational in 500 cities, covering diverse terrains from Leh to Gangtok. The primary delivery hubs include major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

Pioneering efforts in reducing carbon emissions

This achievement marks a critical step toward Amazon’s Climate Pledge commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement’s timeline. By replacing traditional diesel-powered vehicles, the company is significantly cutting carbon emissions within India’s logistics sector.

Testing long-range electric trucks

Amazon is also testing long-range electric heavy trucks on the 350-kilometer Bengaluru-Chennai highway as part of its Climate Pledge Laneshift Initiative. Collaborating with industry leaders such as Ashok Leyland, Billion-E, and ChargeZone, the project aims to explore the viability of electric freight transport in India.

Economic impact and job creation

The deployment of electric vehicles and testing of advanced freight solutions have not only supported environmental goals but also created hundreds of new jobs across the country. Strategic collaborations with delivery service providers, fleet operators, and financial institutions have been instrumental in this progress.

Leadership Perspective

“Deploying over 10,000 electric vehicles and pioneering long-range electric truck testing are achievements we are extremely proud of,” said Abhinav Singh, Vice President of Operations at Amazon India. “Transitioning to zero tailpipe emission trucks is essential for achieving India’s net-zero goals and reducing dependency on diesel freight transport.”
