In a formal letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi dated January 17, 2025, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged the Central Government to implement a 50% fare concession for students using the Delhi Metro. Kejriwal emphasised that the Delhi Metro is a collaborative project, jointly funded by the Delhi Government and the Central Government on a 50:50 basis. He proposed that the financial responsibility for implementing the student concession be shared equally between the two.
Easing the Financial Burden on Students
Highlighting the financial challenges faced by students, Kejriwal stated that this initiative would significantly reduce their travel expenses. "To alleviate the financial strain on students, I propose a 50% concession for them on Delhi Metro fares," he said in the letter, written in Hindi.
Delhi Government's Commitment to Affordable Transport
Kejriwal also reiterated his government’s ongoing efforts to make public transportation more accessible. "We are planning to make bus travel entirely free for students in Delhi," he mentioned, expressing optimism that the Prime Minister would support this metro fare relief proposal.
A Joint Effort for an Equitable Solution
The Delhi CM underscored the importance of collaboration between the state and central governments to realize this initiative. He expressed hope that this step would not only provide financial relief to students but also encourage greater use of public transport, promoting sustainability in the capital.
