The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) has received approval to establish e-workshops and e-charging stations across the state. This ambitious project, valued at Rs 128 crore, marks a significant step toward promoting sustainable and eco-friendly transportation. After being in the planning stage for some time, the project gained momentum following clearance from the state Finance Department. The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has already allocated Rs 35 crore for the first phase, setting the development process in motion.

Building EV infrastructure

The initiative aims to create advanced infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs), including state-of-the-art charging stations and workshops. The Himachal government will fund 10 percent of the total project cost, with the remaining 90 percent covered by a loan from NABARD.

Comprehensive push toward green mobility

The project is part of the state’s broader strategy to encourage environmental sustainability by transitioning to electric vehicles. In addition to e-buses, the government is actively promoting the adoption of e-taxis, signalling a holistic shift toward green mobility solutions. The development of HRTC’s e-workshops will reduce reliance on external agencies for the maintenance of electric buses, especially once current service contracts expire. These facilities will enhance operational efficiency and lead to long-term cost savings.

Paving the way for sustainable development

By constructing e-workshops and charging stations, Himachal Pradesh is laying the foundation for robust EV infrastructure. This initiative not only strengthens the state’s transportation system but also aligns with its goals for environmental conservation and sustainable growth.
