India is still in the early stages of transitioning to electric mobility, with ambitious plans to achieve 30 per cent EV penetration by 2030. However, projections suggest that by the end of the decade, only 40 per cent of new vehicle sales in India will be electric. Despite this, several government initiatives, including the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles in India (FAME) scheme, have played a key role in accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles across the country.
Norway’s Leadership in Electric Mobility
In stark contrast, Norway is on the verge of becoming the first country in the world to eliminate gasoline and diesel cars from its new car market. Despite being an oil-rich nation, Norway has been a global frontrunner in sustainable transportation for years. Norway's electric vehicle sales have seen a dramatic rise—from less than 1 per cent of total auto sales in 2010 to an astounding 88.9 per cent last year.
Nearing 100% Electric Car Sales
Recent data from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, which oversees the country's national road network, indicates that EVs accounted for over 96 per cent of new car sales in the first few weeks of this year. This trend suggests Norway is on the cusp of achieving a fully electric new car market—fulfilling a non-binding goal set by lawmakers in 2017.
A Celebration for a Historic Milestone
Christina Bu, Secretary General of the Norwegian EV Association (NEVA), which represents the country's electric car owners, is optimistic about achieving this milestone. Plans are already in motion to commemorate the occasion with a celebration.
“We have invited numerous politicians and key stakeholders to a party on February 13th because, while we won’t have the final numbers until the year ends, everyone predicts we will end somewhere between 95 per cent and 100 per cent this year,” Bu stated. She added, “At a time when global climate efforts face setbacks, including former U.S. President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the climate agreement, it’s crucial to recognise and celebrate achievements like this.”
The Road Ahead for India
While India’s EV market is still in its early stages, the country can draw valuable lessons from Norway’s success. Continued policy support, infrastructure development, and increased consumer awareness will be crucial in steering India toward a more sustainable transportation future.
