Osamu Suzuki, the long-serving patriarch of Suzuki Motor Corporation, was posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honours, for his monumental contributions to the global and Indian automotive sectors. The esteemed leader, who helmed Suzuki Motor Corporation for over four decades, played a pivotal role in transforming India’s car market with the launch of the iconic Maruti 800. This revolutionary model became synonymous with affordable mobility for millions of Indians, marking a new chapter in the country’s automobile history.

Remembering Osamu Suzuki’s Legacy

Osamu Suzuki passed away in late December last year at the age of 94, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and excellence in the automotive world. His long-standing rapport with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was a testament to his deep connection with the country.

Prime Minister Modi described Suzuki as a legendary figure whose visionary leadership reshaped the global automotive landscape. “His innovative approach to mobility changed perceptions worldwide. Under his guidance, Suzuki Motor Corporation emerged as a global powerhouse, overcoming challenges and fostering expansion,” the Prime Minister noted in a heartfelt tribute shared on the social platform X.

Suzuki’s collaboration with Maruti Udyog Limited (now Maruti Suzuki) marked a turning point in India’s automobile industry. His strategic vision and commitment to innovation laid the foundation for Maruti Suzuki's unparalleled dominance in the Indian market, making cars accessible to the masses. Reflecting on Osamu Suzuki’s contributions, Prime Minister Modi highlighted his affection for India and the transformative impact of his partnership with Maruti. “His work revolutionised the Indian automobile market, bringing affordable and reliable mobility solutions to millions,” said PM Modi.

This acknowledgement of Osamu Suzuki’s indelible contributions underscores his role as a global pioneer who not only reshaped India's automobile market but also set new benchmarks in the global automotive industry.
