The Uttarakhand government has announced plans to impose a green cess on vehicles registered outside the state, with rates ranging from ₹20 to ₹80 depending on the vehicle type. The cess will apply to both private and commercial vehicles, excluding those registered in Uttarakhand and used for essential services such as ambulances and fire brigades. According to Sanat Kumar Singh, Joint Commissioner (Transport) Uttarakhand, the tendering process for implementing the system is already underway. The state aims to operationalize the system by the end of December, he added.

Automatic System implementation underway

The green cess will be collected automatically using advanced number plate recognition cameras. These cameras will identify non-Uttarakhand-registered vehicles and deduct the applicable amount directly from the vehicle owner's FASTag wallet. Charges have been categorized as ₹20 for three-wheelers, ₹40 for four-wheelers, ₹60 for medium vehicles, and ₹80 for heavy vehicles.
