In his address at the AI Action Summit, 2025 Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi pointed out important issues prevailing in the AI sector such as the lack of diverse datasets and local ecosystems in AI training, among others. To highlight the biases of AI systems, the PM gave an example of how an AI model lacks diversity in its understanding when it comes to reading situations.
For example, a majority of people use their right hand to write but that is not the only practice, a few people use their left hand too. But, AI thinks of the majority practice as the only practice, for it has been trained on such examples only. This explains to us how biases in data sets and training models can lead AI models to think and respond in a certain manner without realizing the mistake or gap.
As an alternative, India is pitching for an AI model to be trained on diverse datasets that are also rooted in the local language and practices. It will allow the AI model to serve across the nation, best suiting the needs of the diverse Indian population.
