The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) plans to disconnect all the private numbers that get are anyways involved in telemarketing whether spam calls or spam texts.

Anil Kumar Lahoti, Charmain-TRAI
"It's a big menace to the privacy of telecom consumers. For registered telemarketers, TRAI has a comprehensive regulatory framework," the telecom regulator's Chairman said in an interview with NDTV.

Approach
TRAI has taken various steps to ensure that no spams are entertained through the following:

  1. To remove the unused headers and templates
  2. To ensure the traceability guideline, connecting messages with the PE (PE-TM Linkage).

So far, at least 18 lakh numbers have been disconnected and over 800 entities have been blocklisted, once found unauthorized under the new guidelines.

Commercial Calls Mandate
TRAI has made it compulsory for commercial calls to be made with a “140” series number. Additionally, these calls are routed through a DLT, thus making them traceable. Moreover, people who have subscribed to Do Not Disturb (DND) won’t receive any commercial calls.

E-Commerce Calls
Referring to important and genuine E-commerce calls, which also fall under commercial calls, Mr Lahoti said that TRAI is in consultation with the stakeholders to allocate other series of numbers for making service and transactional calls.

Safe and secure telecom environment
With this initiative, TRAI seeks to tackle the problem of spam and create a safer telecom environment. The organization has implemented several measures to prevent the misuse of headers and content templates, ensuring safety protocols for consumers. TRAI had also urged telecom companies to sever their ties with any unregistered telemarketer.
