Indian startups create over 16.6 lakh direct jobs by Oct 2024, with IT Services leading the way
According to data from DPIIT, India boasts a total of 1.4 lakh registered startups, with a new unicorn emerging approximately every 20 days.

According to self-reported data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Indian startups, recognized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), have created 16.6 lakh jobs across 55 varied industries. Among these, the IT Services sector leads the way with 2,04,119 jobs created until October 2024. 

The top 5 spots in job creation by startups have been captured by IT Services (2,04,119), Healthcare & Lifesciences (1,47,639), Professional & Commercial Services (94,060), Education (90,414) and Construction (88,702). 

Important sectors 

As per the data, the job creation figures of the important sectors of the economy in the startup ecosystem are: 

  1. Artificial Intelligence - 23,918 
  2. Enterprise Software - 24,899 
  3. Finance Technology - 56,819 
  4. Internet of Things (IoT)- 14,885 
  5. Robotics- 5,956 
  6. Telecommunication & Networking- 16,524 

Indian startup scenario 

As per the data with DPIIT, India has a total of 1.4 lakh registered startups while a new unicorn emerges after every 20 days. India, as of 2022, has the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world with the number of unicorns second only to the US, surpassing China back in 2020, according to a report by the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore.

According to LinkedIn's 7th annual Top Startups of India, as of the latest,  the top 10 emerging startups in India are:

  2. Sprinto  
  3. Lucidity 
  4. Growth X
  5. Jar 
  6. Wingy 
  7. SourceBae
  8. Biofuelcircle 
  9. Supersourcing 
  10. Battery Smart 

“These companies aren’t just growing fast and garnering attention from investors and jobseekers — they’re also building innovative solutions that are shaping the future of their industries,” the LinkedIn report stated.
