Bharti Airtel, India's 2nd largest telco, lands the new SEA-ME-WE 6 (Southeast Asia-Middle East-West Europe-6, or SMW6) in Chennai. The 21,700 Rkm submarine cable connects India to Singapore and France (Marseille) crossing Egypt. It aims to enhance India’s global connectivity as well as data center capacity. As the cable project expands its feet, Airtel is bound to gain higher network connectivity with diversified capacity in the submarine cable system globally.
The cable landing in Chennai along with one already there in Mumbai, landed on 30th December 2024. Airtel’s data centre arm Nextra is positioned to gain huge benefits from the same. It will enable the global hyperscalers and businesses in the country to seamlessly access international connectivity and data center services.

Airtel’s Capacity: SEA-ME-WE-6 Project
SubCom, a leading provider of subsea fiber optic cable systems, has completed the engineering, manufacturing, and installation of the SEA-ME-WE-6 cable. Spanning 21,700 Rkm, this advanced submarine cable system connects India to Singapore and France (Marseille), crossing Egypt via terrestrial cables.
Notably, SEA-ME-WE-6 will deliver an impressive 220 Tbps of global capacity to India, significantly enhancing the country’s digital infrastructure and connectivity.

Airtels’s Other Endeavours
Airtel’s global network stretches across five continents, with investments in 34 subsea cables worldwide. Some of its recent investments include major systems like 2Africa, Southeast Asia-Japan Cable 2 (SJC2), and Equiano. In addition to these cables, which connect India to key regions such as APAC, Europe, the Middle East, and the US, Airtel’s extensive subsea network also includes large-scale systems like the i2i Cable Network, among others.
